Artist Info

​My studio is in the green mountains of Vermont where I have lived with my family since 1972. I worked part time as an art teacher in the public schools and am now retired. I received an MFA in painting in 1987 at the Vermont Studio Center in collaboration with Goddard College. 

In the late 90's I discovered monotypes, a 'painterly' form of printmaking and devoted about ten years to this process. I also began writing poetry during this time and continue to do so.  My poetry has been published in a variety of literary journals and a chapbook entitled Turnings. Although the poems and paintings are rarely directly connected to each other, they both begin in what I call 'the place of poetry'.

I am now focused again on oil painting. Much of my work is landscaped based, inspired by my encounter and expansive experience with nature - I also paint from a model, both portraits and figure painting. I strive to capture a presence - the presence of mystery and nature's energy and, in the case of the figure and portrait, the expression of our humanity beyond the individual. An exact likeness is not the goal.​The paintings are strongest when I forget myself – my conscious intentions and judgments - and trust my hand to move, guided by an intuitive, emotional and spiritual connection.
